Health Services for Children

All families with children under 5 years of age are entitled to receive Health Visiting services. Health Visitors are qualified nurses who have completed additional training.  They can give you information about a wide range of services available locally - such as, playgroups, nurseries, housing and education. They can offer guidance about family health matters including immunisations, foods, diet and the growth and development of children.

When you register with a GP a Health Visitor will contact you.  You can see your Health Visitor at your home, at your GP surgery or at one of the groups that are held regularly in a variety of locations across the county.

Immunisation

Immunisation is the best and safest way to help stop babies and young children becoming sick from various infectious diseases.  Babies are given injections called vaccines, which stimulate the body to produce antibodies.  These are the body’s natural defence system to fight infectious diseases.  Immunisation helps keep the body ready to fight the infection if the child comes into contact with the disease.  The injections are free in the UK.  Ask your Health Visitor for further information.
